The Glasgow Girls: Women in the Arts and Crafts Movement in Glasgow (1900-1930)

At the turn of the 19th/20th centuries, Glasgow was the centre for an avantgarde movement of art and design innovation in Europe which we now refer to as ‘The Glasgow Style’. This lecture will look at the fascinating but little known contribution that women designers made to art and design in Glasgow in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Women such as Margaret and Frances Macdonald and Jessie Marion King produced exquisite metalwork, jewellery, textiles and book designs and received international recognition for their work. The lecture will also discuss their achievements in the wider context of women in art and design at the time.
